Power Up Your Knowledge: Understanding Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Labelling
In November 2022, UNDP Tanzania and UNDP Kenya joined forces to organise a study tour aimed at sharing knowledge on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and labelling implementation. The tour hosted the Tanzanian Ministry of Energy and Tanzanian Bureau of Standards (TBS) and aimed at supporting South-South Cooperation while aligning with SDG7 – Affordable Energy for All.
During the tour, the team visited the Kenya Ministry of Energy, Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and Creative Innovations (CI) to learn from Kenya’s experience in MEPS implementation.
What are MEPS? MEPS are sets of procedures that define the minimum energy performance of manufactured products (i.e., maximum energy the product shall consume to be sold to the market). To help consumers choose more energy-efficient products, energy labels are added to products to show how efficient they are in terms of energy consumption. By phasing out inefficient products, MEPS and energy labeling programs can lead to savings on electricity bills, reduce the demand for electricity during peak hours, and increase the availability of electricity.
